Abstract
PROBLEM DEFINITION:
In 1989, Rijkswaterstaat Tidal Waters Division started a biological marine monitoring program in cooperation with regional Directorates of Rijkswaterstaat in the Dutch marine and coastal waters. The monitoring program is being conducted by several organizations subcontracted by the Rijkswaterstaat. The areas covered are: the North Sea, Dutch sector, southwest Netherlands (Westerschelde, Oosterschelde, Veerse Meer, Grevelingenmeer), and the Wadden Sea. The main purpose is to monitor not only the temporal development of the biota in the coastal and marine ecosystem, but also the effects of the management measures taken on this ecosystem.
OBJECTIVES:
To monitor the macrobenthic infauna of the estuarine area in the Delta region, and to evaluate the differences and changes in fauna in relation to environmental conditions, in particular those changes caused by human impact due to e.g. land reclamation schemes (SLUFTER) and deepening of the Westerschelde (environmental impact assessment).
PLANNING 2003:
Continue existing monitoring programmes. Further optimise the reports by including:
1) distribution maps of species,
2) charts on long-term (> 10 yrs) trends of the dominant species,
3) ordination analyses of the data, evaluation of changing benthos related to environmental conditions. Improving the functionality of the relational database with benthic data by adding historical data on benthos and fish of the Delta area. A start has been made with the interpretation of the data. For 2003 an analysis of the Grevelingen and Oosterschelde data from the period 1990 until about 2001 is planned. Changes in community structure will be evaluated with univariate and multivariate statistical techniques (Principal Component Analysis and Multidimensional Scaling). The variation in community structure will be linked to the changes that have occurred in several environmental variables. Environmental data will be used from monitoring programs of Rijkswaterstaat. The optimisation of the sampling programme by more extensive sampling of of environmental data such as abiotic data related to sediment characteristics, the collection water quality data in the areas of macrobenthos sampling, and inclusion of these into the database remains a point of discussion.
