Abstract |
Sport-fishermen have stated that there aren’t as many fishes in the Oosterschelde as before the construction of the storm surge. For NIOO-CEMO this was the motive to restart their fish research. In the late summer of 1999 CEMO has fished at fourteen stations in the Oosterschelde. Twelve of these stations were also used in a former research (period 1983 - 1990) and two stations are new. The method used is the same as before. The net was a beam trawl with an effective width of 2.7 m and a mesh size of 12 mm. The estimated efficiency is 20%. When possible the haul is 1000m. The density is very high in 1999 compared to the results from the first period.Gobiidae mainly caused the high density. Gadidae and Perciformes also occurred in higher densities. At the two new stations the density is approximately 4-5 times higher than at the other stations. It were mainly Gobiidae, probably because of the lower salinity at these stations. At one of the stations many Clupaeidae have been caught. This probably was coincidentally one shoal. Reduction from 36 to 12 locations can cause a maximum difference of 40% in the density, with an average of 17%, whereas the number of species can be underestimated with 15%. |
